What is HVAC?
26
July

An HVAC is much alike to the process of mechanical engineering, using fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. HVAC is in charge of giving you the perfect air temperature and flow, for the comfort of your home. By using ventilation, it brings in the clean fresh air from outside back into your home, rather than reusing the old unwanted air.

HVAC meaning?

HVAC stands for three separate things; Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. All of these are very important for an HVAC system to work the way that is should. Heating your home and keeping it warm, ventilating the old air out to bring in the fresh air, and giving your home and giving you the right amount of air conditioning for your family’s comfort.

So, now that we know what HVAC stands for what does it mean? Well, an HVAC system is a heating and cooling system designed to ventilate out any lousy or dirty air. It is used in both commercial and residential spaces to keep bad air out and pull in the fresh air. Reusing old air can cause a lot of health problems and make the air inside your home dry. Without the proper system, you could be stuck breathing in dirty air.

What is an HVAC system?

There are four main parts for an HVAC system; these include; the furnace, condensing unit,  ductwork, and the thermostat. Each of these play an essential role in the functioning of the system. Other parts such as the vents and refrigerant lines also help the HVAC work properly.

Furnace

The furnace is in charge of transferring heat through a heat exchanger using natural gas or oil to heat the air and keep interior space at the right temperature. It is usually located either in the basement, attic, or a closed-off area like closet space.

Condensing Unit

The condensing unit is in charge of cooling the air using electricity and coolant liquid to reduce the temperature of the air. It helps send hot air out and bringing in cold air. This is located outside of the house.

Ductwork

The duct-work is the transit system used both for cold and hot air. It is in charge of flowing air throughout the entire home.

Thermostat

The thermostat is the main component used when controlling the HVAC system in your home or business. Using the thermostat, you can change the temperature and control the setting and comfort of your home. It is usually located in the living room or open space in your home or business.

Vents

The vents are outlets that help to distribute both hot and cooled air out of the duct vent and into the rooms of a home or business. Vents are located inside the home and are usually facing downward as to not be covered up.

Refrigerant Lines

Refrigerant lines transport refrigerant into the condensing unit turning it into gas, and then back through the evaporator coils as a liquid. These are located outside of the home with the condensing unit.

How does HVAC work?

Sometimes buildings will have separate units heating and cooling, but usually, HVAC is run through a split system, which means the heating and cooling is managed by the same unit. The thermostat is considered the brains for the HVAC system. In order to keep rooms in the surrounding area at the right temperature, the thermostat will tell the HVAC system when the atmosphere of the room becomes too hot or cold. If this happens, the thermostat will let the furnace know so that it can start exchanging heat as needed. The furnace is where all heat transfer happens using a variety of sources like; heat pumps, solar energy, electric resistance, and combustion. It moves heat through the ductwork or piping into the surrounding area of your home using the vents. Vents should not be blocked; otherwise, air will not flow throughout the house. They can contribute both heated and cooled air.

How long do HVAC systems last?

Most HVAC systems will last around 15 to 20 years on a best-case scenario. To keep your system running efficiently and to make it last as long as possible regular HVAC maintenance should be done by a professional . Your friends at Touchstone Commercial Services can help you keep your HVAC system clean and in good repair. Overall getting a check-up can save you money and give your system a better life span.
