Typical Commercial Air Conditioning Unit Issues You Might Face
21
March

Having an issue with your AC unit is not a pleasant experience. During the hot summer months, having proper air conditioning is a must when it comes to commercial comfort. Unfortunately, little problems can still occur when the system is cranked at full power. In today’s article, we will be evaluating 6 typical issues that occur for air conditioning units.

1. Air Conditioner isn’t cooling

If your air conditioner isn’t cooling properly, this is likely an issue in the air flow. Start by checking the return air flow coming into the workplace. If the air flow is low, you can check the filters. Over time, filters can get clogged with material, restricting the amount of flow that can pass through as return air. If things appear dandy inside, inspect the air conditioning unit outside. Make sure the unit has plenty of clearance to operate without branches or other items from obstructing air flow. If airflow doesn’t appear to be the issue, you may want to contact a professional technician.

2. Air Conditioner is noisy

Having an air conditioning system making strange sounds can be an annoying experience, especially when everything else appears to be working fine. In most cases, the noise can be attributed to a loose fixture or part. This can be fixed by tightening any loose screws or fasteners. In some cases, the noise can come from the air conditioner blower. If considering to do a repair on an AC blower, you should take extra precaution before working on the system or hire a professional technician. AC blowers deal with high voltage, so it’s important to shut off the power to the AC unit before touching any parts.

3. Air Conditioner is expensive to run

Poor maintenance on an AC unit can cause the system to lose its performance over time. This causes the system to decrease in efficiency, requiring more energy to operate at the same parameters and increases heating costs. A good idea is to perform regular maintenance on your air conditioning unit to keep it in tip-top shape throughout its operating life.

4. Air Conditioner won’t turn on

Having a broken air conditioner during the Summer months can be frustrating and often unbearable. The stuffy, humid atmosphere is certainly an unpleasant experience. Fixing this problem, however, can generally be easy. In most cases, the thermostat is set incorrectly or acts faulty which keeps the air conditioner from turning on. Check the operation settings of the thermostat to find what temperatures should kick on the AC. If the thermostat appears to be working properly, check the electrical panel for any blown fuses or for a tripped circuit.

5. Air Conditioner runs too long

Where your thermostat is placed is a big factor when it comes to how long your AC will run for. If the thermostat is sitting in direct sunlight, it will be reading a temperature value warmer than what actually exists, turning on the AC for longer periods of time. Changing where your thermostat is placed can be a cost-effective strategy for improving the performance and life of your air conditioning unit.

6. Air Conditioner doesn’t run long enough

Similar to the issue above, the thermostat may be placed in a cool place (e.g. near an ice box or cool air vent). Placing your thermostat in a neutral position can save you money on cooling costs, and help maintain the efficiency of your AC unit.
