Greasy grime, dirt, and mold can stick to your HVAC coils, which increases the operating force and breaks down the compressor’s lubricant, which results in machinery malfunction. Dirty coils can use up to 35% more energy than clean ones making your bills to the roof. Clean coils mean less pressure on your unit and more natural flowing air.

How do I keep my coils clean?

There are a lot of ways you can keep your coils clean. Usually, continued maintenance is one of them. If you haven’t done maintenance on your coils for a while, they may be harder to clean. Here are some steps you can follow when you clean your HVAC.

Quick Tip: You may need to take off the top part of your HVAC unit. That way, you can spray the inside as well as the outside. There may be a power section on one side of the unit. You don’t want to touch it or spray the HVAC unit on that side.

1. Turn off the power

Before you clean your HVAC, make sure to pull out the power connection. Place the cap in a place that is easy to remember. You can even put it on top of the box you pulled it from, it should be located behind your system.

2. Remove the cover

Now you can take off the cover using a screwdriver; you won’t need to if your HVAC is covered with bars instead of a screen. If you can see the coils through the bars, you can usually hose it down without removing any covers.

3. Spray it

Grab your hose or sprayer and start spraying your HVAC unit aiming the hose towards the ground as you move it down. If you plan on using a cleaner, you will wait to apply it until the HVAC unit has been dried from the first spray. Cleaners help you get a better result when you clean your unit but, it is not required. If you plan to use a cleaner, please use protective gear and follow the instructions on the bottle.

4. Reapply the covers on your HVAC

The last step is obvious but essential. If you have taken off any covers of your HVAC reapply them and plug your HVAC plug back in and you are ready to go.
